Many cardiac conditions can cause lightheadedness and at times total loss of consciousness known as syncope. Syncope often occurs either due to very fast or very slow heart rate, or any other causes of sudden and significant blood pressure drop. There are certain tests done to diagnose the underlying cause such as stress tests, echocardiogram, carotid doppler in addition to holter and event monitor placement. In more advanced cases implantation of a loop recorder is necessary. This is a very simple procedure that we do in our office and takes less than 10 minutes with no need for sedatives.
It is paramount to distinguish cardiac causes of passing out from neurologic causes. Dr. Dehghani has a very good relationship with the area neurologists and they often exchange notes and ideas to best address the underlying cause and tailored treatment options for patients with these complex and often difficult to solve conditions.
